You do not have to be actively playing to earn a free drink if you're in the pit. You can play your turn, and after, while watching and cheering others, still enjoy your free drink. It is an initiative by the casino to keep players in their seats which motivates them to keep playing longer. Just ensure to find a spot close to a table or slot machine with lots of action.
Also, tipping the waiter even if the drink is free will ensure they keep coming around to check on you.
