Free NFR Watch Parties at 24 Oxford

Not everyone gets a seat inside the Thomas & Mack. For locals who want the rodeo with a crowd around them, this is the part of the Virgin Hotels Las Vegas NFR lineup to circle.

Every night of the rodeo, 24 Oxford will host complimentary watch parties from 5:30 to 9:00 p.m., presented by Kerry Kelley Bits & Spurs. The resort promises themed activations, giveaways and chances to win throughout the evening.

Two nights let you stay in the same room after the broadcast ends. On Friday, Dec. 4, doors open at 9:00 p.m. for Whitey Morgan and the 78s, which is a ticketed show. On Saturday, Dec. 5, singer Jenna Paulette brings back her 2nd Annual NFR Late Night Roundup, a free event that starts right after the viewing party. You need to RSVP for that one.

The announcement doesn’t list age policies for the watch parties. If you’re thinking of bringing kids, call the resort first.

Rodeo Reds and Fringe and Fortune at The Shag Room

The Shag Room, the resort’s cocktail lounge, becomes home to Rodeo Reds during NFR. Virgin calls it the official pre-rodeo destination for fans and competitors. The western parties run Dec. 3–5 and Dec. 10–12, with live country music and a chance to mingle with rodeo names before each night’s performance at the arena.

The same lounge hosts Fringe and Fortune on Saturday, Dec. 5, and Saturday, Dec. 12, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. The afternoon includes a showcase from the western fashion label Westerly and live paintings by cowboy artist Laura Goodson. There will also be a live chain-stitch booth where you can have your own gear customized.

That booth is the detail I’d plan around. A jacket stitched with your name or your ranch brand during NFR week is a better souvenir than anything sold in a gift shop. The resort hasn’t said whether Fringe and Fortune is free, so check before you go.

NFR Concerts at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas

The big shows are in The Theater, the resort’s 4,600-capacity room run by AEG Presents. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. for every Theater date:

• Thursday, Dec. 3: Marcus King Band with Kelsey Waldon

• Wednesday, Dec. 9: Casey Donahew & Josh Abbott Band

• Thursday, Dec. 10: Gavin Adcock with Mack Geiger

• Saturday, Dec. 12: Sam Barber with Josiah and The Bonnevilles & Wild Horses

24 Oxford is the smaller room. It hosts Whitey Morgan and the 78s on Dec. 4 and Jenna Paulette’s free roundup on Dec. 5, both with doors at 9:00 p.m.

Ticket prices weren’t announced. The resort is pointing fans to ticket links for each show, so virginhotelslv.com is the place to start. If you only make one trip across town for music, the Dec. 12 show lands on the last Saturday of the rodeo, when the whole city is celebrating.

A Blackjack Table for Golden Circle of Champions

On Friday, Dec. 4, at 11:00 a.m., ten special guests will sit down on the casino floor for the All in For Champions Celebrity Blackjack Tournament. Seven X Jewelry is presenting it, and the winner takes home a custom championship buckle.

The money goes to Golden Circle of Champions, a nonprofit with deep rodeo roots that supports pediatric cancer research. The players haven’t been named yet. Even so, this is the event I’d most like to see more of during NFR week: the rodeo community using its biggest stage to take care of kids.

The tournament is on the casino floor, and you have to be 21 to gamble in Nevada.

What to Eat: Lucia Mexican Grill and ONE Steakhouse

Growing up in Mexico, the rodeo I knew was the charreada. My abuelo had firm opinions about what belonged on a plate afterward, and I’m not sure what he would have said about the Wagyu Beef Taco Trio at Lucia Mexican Grill. The tacos come with roasted jalapeño cucumber cream, serrano peppers, tomato and arugula chimichurri. To drink, Lucia is pouring the Cowboy Cadillac Margarita, made with Patrón Reposado, Grand Marnier, Cointreau and fresh lime. Lucia hasn’t listed prices for either special.

ONE Steakhouse, from Michael and David Morton, has an NFR cocktail menu at $18 a drink:

• The Harvest: Bulleit bourbon, spiced apple syrup, cinnamon syrup, Australian bitters and dried apple

• Fit for Royalty: Crown Royal, honey-jalapeño syrup, lemon juice and a float of Fever-Tree ginger beer, with rosemary and dried lemon

• Old Fashioned Amigos: Casamigos Reposado, agave nectar syrup and Angostura bitters, with a dried blood orange

The food special is a $79 32-ounce bone-in Australian Wagyu short rib, pepper-crusted and served with roasted butternut squash and brussels sprouts. Thirty-two ounces is a lot of beef. Bring someone hungry and split it before the watch party.

The NFR Room Deal and Free Parking

For out-of-town family coming in for the rodeo, or anyone who wants to skip the drive home after a late show, Virgin Hotels Las Vegas is offering 25% off room rates plus a $50 food and beverage credit at select restaurants. The deal requires a two-night minimum stay between Dec. 3 and Dec. 12 and books through the resort’s website.

For those of us driving in from Henderson or anywhere else in the valley, the most useful detail is the simplest one. Valet and self-parking are both free.

My plan is a weeknight watch party with friends. We’ll take a booth, cheer the bareback riding, and be home before the kids are asleep. Save the Saturday shows for the nights you can stay late.
