It was invigorating to be in a packed space with folks dressed to the nines at the sprawling Doberman Drawing Room in the Arts District (located on the site of the old Artifice club). The scene? The imaginatively curated “Rock The Disco.”
Impressive Vegas foursome Soft Echo first led everyone down atmospheric, psychedelic roads—a fitting soundtrack to the Doberman’s mysterious and expensive-looking old-world ambience. I’m giving this original alternative-rock band extra thumbs up for their inspired cover of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game.”

Standout vinyl DJ/artist Night Weapons followed, spinning disco hits as well as deep cuts like Italian disco legend Cerrone’s foreboding and funky synth classic “Supernature,” which I remember dancing to (fueled by gin and tonics) at discos in my native NYC when it was released in 1977.
Hoping the folks at Doberman Drawing Room hold another “Rock The Disco” event sometime soon. It proved that there’s an open-minded audience out there who want to experience the music of both genres on one night and under one roof.
