You might have seen recent stories about how Gen Z (referring to anyone born from 1997-2012) is drinking less alcohol than previous generations. A Time magazine article from earlier this year quoted a government official as saying “…today’s younger generations are just less interested in alcohol and are more likely than older generations to see it as risky for their health and to participate in periods of abstinence like dry January.”

Don’t tell that to the hordes of young people who regularly descend on the many bars in the Arts District. On a recent Saturday night, the “concept” bars were absolutely crammed with Gen Zers at places like the desert/vintage Vegas-themed Dustland, Viking Mike’s Alpine Yurt Bar (with its Nordic/Viking aesthetic), tropical hot spot Stray Pirate, and witchy Dark Sister.

Over at the one-year-old Dustland, it didn’t matter that the temperature was 100° at around 9pm. Lots of folks were gathered on the bar’s outdoor patio and huge yard to see the rootsy/indie/garage band Yawpers from Colorado and the hard-charging Vegas group Chemical Tribe perform on the venue’s self-described “Quonset hut stage”  (the venue, I should add, has an excellent sound system). Like most gigs listed at the Dustland website, this was a no-cover show where the good vibrations, and certainly the drinks, flowed.
